On Friday, Sept. 25, our freshmen took to the stage to deliver their campaign speeches and share why they wanted to represent their class!

Our 2nd graders had the chance to become interviewers as they sat down with their reading partners! 🎤📖

Students practiced asking questions, listening carefully, and learning more about one another. It was a fun way to build communication skills while strengthening the connections between our reading partners! ❤️

Welcome to Maplewood, Mr. Adam Hughes!

We’re excited to welcome Adam Hughes to Maplewood and our Pre-Apprenticeship and Construction program!

Mr. Hughes brings eight years of experience teaching pre-apprenticeship and construction and is looking forward to continuing the strong tradition of hands-on learning in Maplewood’s wood shop while expanding opportunities for our students.

Students will continue working on familiar projects like picture frames, easels, lathe projects, pens, bats and CNC projects, while also taking on more construction-focused and real-world applications.

Through the Carpenter’s Union Career Connections curriculum, juniors and seniors will have opportunities to build birdhouses, cornhole boards, Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, sheds and more. Students will also be introduced to practical skills such as wall and roof framing, basic electrical work and plumbing.

We’re excited to have Mr. Hughes at Maplewood and can’t wait to see what our Rockets create, build and learn this year! 🚀

Learning Comes to Life at the Orchard!

This month, our first-grade students have been learning all about apple trees and the apple life cycle. Yesterday, they took their learning outside the classroom with a field trip to Hartford Orchard!

Students had the chance to pick apples and see firsthand how apples are cleaned, graded and sorted.

🍎 Johnny Appleseed Day! 🍏

Last week, our kindergarten students had a great time learning all about Johnny Appleseed! Students from all three kindergarten classes tasted different types of apples and even made their own applesauce.

🔎 Who stole Mr. Wagner’s lunch?

Students in Mr. Wagner’s Criminal Justice class put their investigative skills to work during a hands-on fingerprint lab!

Students dusted the lunch container for fingerprints and compared the prints they discovered with fingerprint cards they created earlier in the week. There was even a little attempted sabotage along the way, but our investigators followed the evidence and ultimately identified the culprit!

From September 21–25, students will participate in Start With Hello Week, a Sandy Hook Promise initiative that helps promote an inclusive school culture. Check out some of the activities happening at Maplewood Elementary next week!

Last week, students in Mr. Dudley’s classes reflected on the events and lasting impact of September 11, 2001.

World History and Honors World History students explored a timeline and viewed videos showing how the day’s events unfolded. American Government students discussed the Patriot Act and watched a documentary, while Geography students studied flight paths, the hijackers’ countries of origin, and maps of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

These lessons helped students develop a deeper understanding of 9/11 and how it shaped our nation and the world. 🇺🇸

Miss Snowden is a Youngstown State University graduate originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed her student teaching at McDonald and has had a love for music from a young age, starting clarinet in 4th grade and joining choir in 6th grade. 🎶

A fun fact about Miss Snowden: She has two cats named Tinkerbell and Perrywinkle! 🐱🐱

We’re excited to have Miss Snowden join the Rocket family and can’t wait to see her share her love of music with our students!
